Here is a look at our learning from this week (March 16–20, 2026)
Hello Parents and Carers! We have had another wonderful week of discovery and creativity in Year 2. Here is a summary of our learning:
🧪 Science: Life Cycles
Building on our plant experiments, we have been focusing on the life cycle of a bean. The children have been learning how a tiny seed transforms into a plant and have even planted our very own class flowers to observe.
🙏 RE: Easter Symbols & Church Visit
It was a spiritual week as we visited the church for a special Stations of the Cross service. In class, we explored the symbols of light and water used in the Easter Vigil Mass, making connections to the story of Creation and Baptism through some beautiful collages.
✍️ English: Lila’s Diary
We have been working hard on our descriptive writing. The children wrote emotive diary entries from the perspective of Lila, using impressive vocabulary to bring her journey to life.
🔢 Maths: Multiplication & Arrays
In maths, we’ve been mastering multiplication. We learned that multiplication is commutative (it can be done in any order!) and practiced building and describing arrays to represent our calculations.
🇪🇸 Spanish: En mi Pueblo
Our linguists are now building full sentences! We practiced saying what is in our town, including un cine (cinema), una escuela, una piscina, una pista de patinaje, and una panadería.
📢 Phonics & Spellings
Next week, our focus phonemes for phonics and our spelling test will be the split digraphs: i-e, o-e, and u-e.
🐣 Reminder: Easter Projects
Just a quick reminder that all Easter projects are due back in school this Monday, 23rd March. We can't wait to see your wonderful creations!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Meredith

Hello Parents and Carers! It has been a busy British Science and Assessment week in Year 2. Here is a summary of our learning:
🧪 Science: British Science Week
We’ve been exploring how light travels and monitoring our plant experiment. We are comparing five plants (normal, no water, no soil, no sun, and one in the fridge) to see which stay healthy and why. Ask your child which plant they think is doing the best!
🙏 RE: Lent & Reconciliation
We discussed Lent as a time for forgiveness. Linking to Solidarity, Peace, and Human Dignity, we explored how the Sacrament of Reconciliation helps restore our relationships with God and others.
🏔️ Geography: Mountains
Our explorers have been identifying the physical features of mountains and learning the vocabulary used to describe these landforms.
🇪🇸 Spanish: En el Pueblo
We practiced naming places in a town, including una piscina (swimming pool), una panadería (bakery), una escuela (school), and una pista de patinaje (ice-skating rink).
💐 Happy Mother’s Day
Wishing all our wonderful mothers and carers a very Happy Mother’s Day this weekend. We hope you have a relaxing day!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Meredith

Spring 2 Week 2:
Hello Parents and Carers! It has been an extra special week in Year 2, filled with both scientific wonder and a fantastic celebration of our favourite stories. Here is a summary of our learning:
🌱 Science: Ready, Set, Grow!
The wait is over—we have officially planted our seeds! The classroom is looking much greener as we begin our "Young Gardener" investigation. The children are incredibly excited to monitor their pots over the coming days to see whose will sprout first.
📚 Special Event: World Book Day
We had a marvellous time celebrating World Book Day this week! A huge highlight was our special guest reader, Mr Reid, who joined us to share some of his favourite stories. It was wonderful to see the children’s enthusiasm for reading shine through during our shared sessions.
📖 English: Setting the Scene
Using our text Lila and the Secret of Rain, we have been sharpening our descriptive tools. We’ve focused on "painting a picture" with words, using rich vocabulary to describe the hot, dusty setting of the story before the rain arrives.
➕ Maths: Groups and Patterns
We have officially kicked off our new unit on Multiplication and Division! To start, we’ve been exploring "equal groups" and learning how "repeated addition" (like 2+2+2) is the secret bridge to multiplication.
🗣️ Phonics: Sounding it Out
In our phonics sessions, we have been working hard on the following trigraphs: -ire (fire, hire), -ear (near, hear), and -ure (pure, cure). See if your child can spot any of these sounds in their reading books this weekend!
It has been a joy to see the children so engaged, especially during our World Book Day activities. Ask your little ones which story Mr Reid read to them or if they can show you how to make three "equal groups" using their toys at home!
Have a wonderful evening
Miss Meredith

Week 4:
It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 2! We are so proud of how the children have dived into their new topics with such curiosity and enthusiasm. Here is a look at what we have been up to:
Maths: Making Sense of Money 🪙
We have officially started our new topic on Money! This week, the children have been busy:
- Recognising and naming all the different UK coins and notes.
- Counting amounts by starting with the highest value first and adding on.
- Exploring symbols, learning when to use ‘p’ for pence and ‘£’ for pounds.
- Home Challenge: Next time you are at the shops, ask your child to help identify the coins in your purse or check the price tag of an item to see if they can spot the ‘£’ or ‘p’ symbols!
Science: Habitat Heroes & Minibeast Hunters 🐜
In Science, we have been exploring Habitats—the places where plants and animals live. The highlight of our week was definitely our micro-habitat and minibeast hunt in the school grounds!
- We discussed what a micro-habitat is (a very specific, small home like under a log or a stone).
- We used our "detective skills" to find woodlice under logs, beetles in tree bark, and snails in the damp grass.
- The children learned how to handle these tiny creatures gently and return them safely to their homes.
English: The Storm Whale 🐳
Our class book is the beautiful story "
" by Benji Davies.
- We have been following the story of Noi, a lonely boy who finds a baby whale washed up on the beach after a storm.
- The children are using this heart warming tale as inspiration to create their own information texts about whales.
- We are focusing on using factual language, headings, and diagrams to share everything we have learned about these amazing sea mammals!
- Thank you for your continued support with reading at home and homework!
Best wishes,
Miss Meredith

Week 3:
It has been another busy and productive week in Year 2! Here is a summary of our learning:
Maths
We have reached the end of our unit on Shape. This week, the children focused on identifying the properties of 3D shapes. They have become experts at counting the number of faces, edges, and vertices on shapes such as cubes, cuboids, cylinders, and pyramids.
- Try this at home: Ask your child to find 3D shapes in your pantry and describe their properties to you!
English
This week, we dived into the deep blue as we began exploring information texts about whales. The children have been researching fascinating facts and learning how to use headings and subheadings to organize their own non-fiction reports. We look forward to finishing our "Whale Manuals" next week.
Science
We turned into nature explorers this week! To support our learning on living things, we went on a scavenger hunt across the school grounds to find micro-habitats. We discovered plenty of minibeasts living under logs and stones, and we discussed how these small environments differ from larger habitats like oceans, deserts, and rainforests.
History
Our journey back to 1666 continues. This week, we focused on sequencing the key events of the Great Fire of London. The children worked hard to put the timeline in order, from the first spark at Pudding Lane to the final embers, discussing how the fire spread so quickly through the wooden houses.
Useful Links for Learning:
- Maths: Practice identifying 3D shapes with the Topmarks Shape Monsters game.
- English: Learn more about different species of whales at National Geographic Kids.
- History: Explore an interactive timeline of the fire at the Museum of London's Great Fire website
Have an excellent Weekend.
Kind regards,
Miss Meredith
Week 2 (12 - 16 January 2026)
It has been another busy and productive week in Year 2! Here is a summary of what the children have been exploring:
Maths
This week, we focused on the properties of 2D shapes. The children have been identifying and describing shapes by counting their sides and vertices (corners), as well as looking for lines of symmetry.
English
In our writing sessions, we have been inspired by our focus book, The Storm Whale by Benji Davies. The children used descriptive vocabulary to write beautiful list poems capturing the atmosphere of the story and the ocean.
Science
We have been investigating what animals need to survive (water, food, and air) and exploring different habitats. The children discussed how various environments provide the specific things animals need to stay healthy and safe.
Religious Education (RE)
In RE, we have been exploring two significant New Testament stories:
- The Temptation in the Wilderness (Luke 4:1-15): We discussed how Jesus showed strength and faith during his 40 days in the desert.
- The Cure of the Paralytic (Luke 5:17-26): We looked at the importance of friendship and faith in this miracle story.
Here is a look at our learning from this week (January 6–9, 2026)
Week 1:
Dear parents and carers,
It has been a brilliant first full week of 2026! The Year 2 children have settled back into their routines beautifully and have shown such curiosity in our new topics.
📐 Maths: Shape Detectives
We have been exploring the world of 2D shapes. The children have been busy identifying shapes and describing their properties, such as the number of sides and vertices. We even hunted for these shapes around the classroom to see how they appear in real-world objects!
✍️ English: Descriptive Writing
We’ve dived into our new focus story this week. To bring our writing to life, the children have been practicing expanded noun phrases. They have done a wonderful job using descriptive adjectives to add detail to our characters and settings—ask them if they can describe a character to you using "two adjectives and a noun!"
🔬 Science: Living vs. Non-Living
Our young scientists have been investigating the world around them. We have been identifying and comparing the differences between things that are alive, things that are dead, and things that have never been alive. We had some great discussions about what "life processes" actually look like.
🎨 Art: The Colour Lab
Things got colourful this week as we explored colour mixing. The children moved beyond primary colours to investigate what happens when we mix two secondary colours together. We discovered some very interesting earthy tones and tertiary shades!
⛪ RE: Epiphany & New Beginnings
In RE, we retold the visit of the Magi, linking our learning to the Feast of the Epiphany (celebrated on January 6th). We also explored the story of how Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist, marking the start of his public ministry.
📜 History: Past vs. Present
We have started identifying similarities and differences between ways of life in the past and the present. The children were fascinated to compare how everyday objects and routines have changed over time.
Take a look at some of our photos below.
Have an excellent Weekend.
