Welcome to Year 2!

My name is Miss Elawad, and I am so excited to be joining the wonderful team here at Our Lady of Lourdes. I am delighted to be your teacher and cannot wait to get to know each and every one of you!

Welcome to an exciting new school year, Year 2! We have a fantastic year ahead filled with fun, learning, laughter, exciting experiences and lots of adventures.

Year 2 is a very special year, and there is so much for us to discover together. You will have lots of opportunities to learn new things, develop your confidence, challenge yourselves and become even more independent learners. We have some wonderful learning planned, with plenty of creative activities, exciting experiences and opportunities to learn through play and exploration.

There may be times when our learning feels tricky, but that is all part of the adventure! We will encourage each other, try our best, learn from our mistakes and celebrate our successes along the way.

I am so excited to begin this journey with you all. Get ready for a year full of learning, friendship, fun, teamwork and adventure!

I can't wait to see all the amazing things we will achieve together. 

Autumn 1 Week 8

What a wonderful end to a long half term! The children have worked incredibly hard, and I am so proud of the progress they have made. They have all blossomed into keen, enthusiastic and active learners.

We kicked off the week by publishing our Bob Marley biographies, showcasing all the fantastic writing the children have been working on.

We also went on our first school trip of the year to the National Gallery! The children’s behaviour was fantastic, and they represented our school brilliantly. They explored the gallery through an exciting treasure hunt, searching for different paintings, before enjoying a workshop where they learnt more about the history of the gallery. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience art first-hand and learn beyond the classroom.

As we come to the end of a busy and successful half term, I would like to thank all the children for their hard work, enthusiasm and wonderful attitudes towards learning. They should be incredibly proud of everything they have achieved! I hope all our families have a restful and enjoyable half-term break, filled with lots of happiness and special moments together. I look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting half term of learning and new adventures!

Autumn 1 Week 7

Happy Black History Month!

This week, the children have enjoyed celebrating Black History Month through our learning. We have been learning about the life of Bob Marley and how he positively impacted the lives of people around the world by spreading messages of peace, love and equality.

In English, we have been writing biographies about the life of Bob Marley, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. Next week, we will be publishing our biographies to showcase all our fantastic writing!

In Art, we used oil pastels to create different shades and textures while creating our own pictures of Bob Marley. The children worked hard to develop their artistic skills and bring their artwork to life.

Autumn 1 Week 6

This week, we continued our unit of learning on Addition and Subtraction. We learnt our number bonds to 100, added and subtracted 1s, added by making 10, added three 1-digit numbers and ended the week by adding to the next 10.

In English, we continued our writing unit on Explanation Texts. We worked really hard this week to write a paragraph each day about the impact of litter on animals and the environment, as well as the importance of recycling. We ended the week by publishing our explanation texts. Well done, Year 2! You are all developing into amazing writers!

In Art, we created observational sketches of different objects, using oil pastels and sketching pencils to develop our artistic skills.

In Science, we learnt about what humans need to survive, exploring the basic needs that keep us healthy and alive.

In RE, we continued to explore the meaning of Psalm 139. We wrote about what makes us special and unique. In our second RE lesson, we wrote prayers giving thanks to God for His blessings and expressing our gratitude for how much He loves us.

Autumn 1 Week 5

This week in Maths, we completed our end-of-unit assessment for Place Value and started our new unit on Addition and Subtraction. We recapped our number bonds to 10 and created fact family number sentences.

In English, we started our new writing cycle on Explanation Texts. We analysed the language and structural features of an explanation text. We then moved on to writing explanation sentences about the importance of recycling and the dangers of pollution.

In RE, we explored the first sacrament of Baptism further by looking at the different symbols used in Baptism and their meanings. We also learnt about Psalm 139 and how we are all wonderfully made by God.

In Science, we created a fact file on reptiles.

This week in History, we explored the life of King James I.

In Art, we continued our learning on tonal shades and explored how to create different shades when sketching.

This week in Computing we created our own inventions and focused on the inputs and outputs of our invention.

Well done Year 2, we had a wonderful week of learning! :) 

Autumn 1 Week 4

This week in English, we wrote a diary entry and included all of the language and structural features we have learnt over the last few weeks.

This week, we continued our unit on Place Value. Our focus was on ordering numbers and objects using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols. We also learnt how to order numbers from greatest to smallest and practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

In History, the children created posters about Bonfire Night.

In RE, we learnt about the importance of the first sacrament, Baptism, and how it welcomes Christians into the faith and creates a sense of belonging.

This week in Science, the children created fact files about amphibians.

In Art, we explored tonal shades and how to use pressure to create different tones.

The children learnt how to ask someone how they are feeling in Spanish.

Autumn 1 Week 3:
 

In Maths, this week we continued our unit of place value, the children learnt how to flexibly partition a 2-digit number using base 10, how to count in 1s and 10s on a number line and how to estimate.

In English, we continued our learning on our story 'The Secret Sky Garden', we learnt about the language features of a diary entry and annotated a diary entry in pairs. We then applied those features throughout the week and wrote sentence using past tense verbs and time connectives.

This week in Science we learnt about the features of a fish and sorted fish based on their diet.

In History, we created a wanted poster for  Guy Fawkes and included all the key facts we learnt throughout the last two weeks.

In Art, the children experimented with different materials and had a go at creating textures with the materials using oil pastels.

The children were very excited to continue their Spanish learning and learnt how to introduce themselves in Spanish.

Autumn 1 Week 2:

In Maths, we continued our learning about place value. We used place value charts and part-whole models to practice partitioning 2-digit numbers into tens and ones.

In English, we explored our story, The Secret Sky Garden, and created a story map to familiarise ourselves with the story. We then wrote a setting description of the sky garden using adjectives.

In RE, we learnt about how to practice good stewardship in our everyday lives. We also explored the story of Noah’s Ark from the Bible.

In History, we continued learning about the Gunpowder Plot and explored different religions during the Stuart Era.

This week in Science, we continued our topic, Animals Including Humans, and explored the different features of birds and what they need to survive.

We also had our first Spanish lesson this week, and the children were very excited to begin their Spanish learning! Buenos días, Year 2!

Please check our Google Classroom for this weeks homework, you can find the login inside your child's homework book. Reading is very important in helping your child make progress and develop their confidence and enjoyment of reading. We kindly ask that you read with your child for 15 minutes daily.
