St. John-Year 6

Welcome to Spring Year 6. I am looking forward to meeting you all and working with your children. This will be a year filled with a lot of learning and fun. We will explore new concepts and prepare for the SAT's. This week, students reviewed previous concepts from before the break and we also had the pleasure of attending the Royal Opera House. As the term progresses, students will have the opportunity to learn in creative ways and collaborate with one another.

I am looking forward to a fun term.

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to welcome you and your child to Year 6! This year will be a time of tremendous growth, learning, and preparation as we get ready for the transition to secondary school. Our classroom is a place where curiosity, creativity, and collaboration thrive, and I am dedicated to supporting every student in reaching their full potential.

Here you’ll find regular updates on your child’s learning journey. Together, we can make this final year of primary school a rewarding and memorable experience!

Looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Warm regards,

The Year 6 Curriculum Overview, class timetable and suggested reading list for Year 6.

Year 6 had a great time at The Royal Opera House. They had the pleasure of seeing Hansel and Gretel. Students were very engaged and got to participate in a sing-a-long at the end of the show with the cast.

Year 6 reviewed autumn term material from each subject. Students worked together in their table groups to recall the information. They had the chance to do this for every subject.

Year 6 shared a delicious Christmas dinner together on Tuesday. There were lots of Christmas crackers pulled and jokes told. Thank you to all the kitchen staff for such a festive experience.

It was the annual KS2 Christmas Carol Concert on Wednesday at Five Precious Wounds. Year 6 sang ‘Silent Night’. Every class sang beautifully and it put us all in the Christmas mood. Thank you to all those who attended.

Year 6 went to the Lyceum Theatre to watch ‘The Lion King’.

“It was an unforgettable experience, i can’t wait to go back.” Helen

“The music, costumes and set design blew me away, WOW.” Brian O

Year 6 carried out a science investigation to find out does wire length affect the components in a circuit.

“My results showed me that as wire length increases the brightness of a bulb decreases.” Lakiah

“I found out that when I added more wires to the circuit, the sound of the buzzer got quieter.” Magd

Chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark. Have a look at year 6 and their efforts to recreate this.

It was No Pens Day on Wednesday, year 6 completed some hands on maths investigations, drama role plays from our class book, explored using paint, chalk, oil pastels and clay.

Year 6 took part in the Junior Citizenship Scheme (JCS). They had workshops with TfL, London Fire Brigade, London Police and many more. They learned important life skills like how to look after their bodies through healthy eating and oral hygiene.

Year 6 built circuits to test how increasing the voltage in a circuit affects the brightness of a light bulb.

Two local police officers came to speak about County Lines. This is when criminals exploit young people. We should always tell a trusted adult if we suspect this is happening.

We created freeze frames of our characters (refugees) in a boat who were lost at sea and had just been rescued. They had been through perilous conditions, felling hungry, thirsty, exhausted and suffering from hypothermia.

Year 6 brushed up on their atlas skills to complete a scavenger hunt around Asia. “It was a fun way to learn new facts about Asia.” Magd Year 6.

As part of Continents Day, year 6 explored the ancient art form of calligraphy. They developed their brush strokes to produce a range of Chinese and Japanese characters and symbols that represent words special to them. We may have some masters of this art form in the making. “I wrote my brother’s name using Japanese symbols, it looked really unusual.” Lena Year 6

The NSPCC came to visit us and taught us the importance of speaking out and staying safe. If you need to talk remember you can call Childline on 0800 1111. You are not on your own.

Year 6 had their class assembly this week; The assembly was based on their new geography topic (Asia). They performed traditional Japanese and Korean songs and dances. There was a quiz at the end and all the classes performed really well, we all learnt a lot about the continent of Asia.

We celebrated our 50th birthday this week, we had a special dinner and cupcake to mark the occasion. The hall was decorated with birthday balloons, there was a real party atmosphere.

We looked at our decade (2014-2024) and linked it to Black History Month. We combined the first Marvel black superhero (Black Panther) with the symbolic Windrush Ship that forms a huge part of our local history to create a Windrush Wakanda Ship.

As part of our 50th birthday celebrations, year 6 created a 3D design of what they thought our school might look like in 50 years time. They used the software Tinkercad to do this.

As part of Black History Month we have been looking at the work of Roger Robinson and Benjamin Zephaniah. There poetry inspired us to create our own poems.

Sometimes

Sometimes I think I am not meant to be.

Sometimes I say things that are not true.

The feeling of being a Nigerian makes me feel happy,

But sometimes the people get to me, but I find myself getting up,

Like the proud Nigerian I am.

My heart fills with joy because I am proud to be.

Sometimes our skin colour says ‘different’,

But we rewrite that story,

Into a better one, one were there are equal rights, equal people and where we are all joined together.

Sometimes…

Year 6

In science, year 6 have been investigating refraction. Light travels at different speeds through water and transparent materials such as glass causing it to bend and change direction. This made an arrow appear to have changed the direction it was pointing.

Year 6 used the software Tinkercad to create a 3D digital reconstruction of the tomb of Fu Hao. They had been learning about the burial rituals that existed during the Shang Dynasty in history.

In computing, year 6 used Microsoft microbits which they coded to do a range of tasks.

Mrs Kent's Maths group measures and weighed objects and multiplied their answers by ten and one hundred to help a giant plan his classroom!

In science this week, Year 6 explored how light travels by building their own periscopes! Using just a cereal box, two small mirrors, and some creativity, they learned how light can reflect off surfaces and allow us to see around corners. After carefully cutting and assembling their periscopes, the class had fun testing them out to see how the mirrors bounced light to create a clear image. It was a great hands-on way to understand how reflection works in everyday life!

Year 6 have been exploring square and cube numbers in Maths.

In English we acted out some key scenes from our class book 'Rose Blanche.' This helped us get inside the mind of Rose and understand how she might be feeling in order to write an effective diary entry.

Year 6 ate lunch today with their new buddies in Reception Class. The oldest pupils helping some of our youngest find their feet.

V&A Museum

Year 6 visited the V&A Museum to discover the China Gallery. In our first History topic, we are learning about the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China. We got to see some really interesting artefacts from this time period. It was a fun and educational day out and we really enjoyed taking in the splendour of the museum.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It was very nice to meet you all on Thursday. I have attached the presentation I used for those who were not able to attend and for anyone who would like to revisit any of the points discussed.

Kind regards,

Mr McNally
