Welcome to Year 1!

I am Miss Conway, your class teacher, and I am delighted to be working alongside Mrs Shah this year. We are so excited to welcome you into Key Stage 1 and begin this exciting new chapter together.

Year 1 is a wonderful year filled with exciting learning, creativity, friendship and plenty of opportunities to grow. We have lots of engaging learning planned and can’t wait to see the children develop their confidence, curiosity and independence as they continue to develop as independent learners.

We are looking forward to working closely with you and your children throughout the year, supporting them every step of the way and creating lots of happy memories together.

Week Beginning 19/10/2026

This week, Year 1 have been working incredibly hard! We spent time learning all about Black History Month and celebrating the achievements of some truly inspirational people. We explored the lives of Floella Benjamin, Mary Seacole, Marcus Rashford, Mo Farah and Maggie Aderin-Pocock. We learnt about their incredible achievements, how they have made a difference to the world and why they are such important role models.

We then created our own artwork in the style of Temi Coker, taking inspiration from his work to create fantastic pieces of art celebrating the inspirational people we have learnt about. The children showed wonderful creativity and used their own ideas to make each piece unique. We are so proud of their efforts!

A huge well done to everyone for reaching the end of our first half-term! We are so proud of all the hard work, progress and enthusiasm you have shown. You have all done brilliantly!

Week Beginning 12/10/2026

We have been marking October as the Month of the Mary by learning about the rosary and reflecting on Mary's important role as the mother of Jesus. We have also been exploring the Our Father prayer in RE, thinking about its meaning and significance.

In English, we have written our postcards from Beegu to conclude our learning about the story. The children have worked hard to bring their ideas to life and have shown that they are fantastic writers in the making! In Maths, we have been practising building and writing addition number sentences and exploring addition fact families. The children have shown great resilience as they have tackled new challenges and developed their understanding. In Art, we completed our self-portraits inspired by Paul Klee, exploring colour, shape and line to create our own unique artwork.

Week Beginning 5/10/2026

This week we completed our first unit on place value and have made a magnificent start to our new topic, addition and subtraction. We have been exploring part-whole models and thinking carefully about how numbers can be made from smaller parts. In History, we have been learning about our final monarch, Queen Elizabeth I. We discovered just how far back in the past she lived — over 400 years ago! We explored a famous painting from her time to find out more about this fascinating queen. 

In RE, we have been exploring different ways that we can pray. We created our own prayers and then had the opportunity to spend some peaceful time in our chapel, experiencing and reflecting on our prayers.

Well done, Year 1, for another brilliant week of learning and for all the hard work you have put in!

Week Beginning 28/09/2026

Another great week in Year 1 - we have had another busy and exciting week of learning, and the children have worked incredibly hard. In English we completed our first big writes, retelling the story of Beegu. The children have produced some fantastic writing, and they should all be so proud of the work they have created. Well done, Year 1! 

We are almost at the end of our Place Value unit in maths. The children have been fantastic learners, exploring numbers and using the language greater than, less than and equal to. They have really enjoyed putting their learning into practice!

In Science, we have been learning all about hearing. We even went on a special hearing walk around school to see what different sounds we could hear. The children were fantastic at listening carefully and identifying the sounds around them. During RE we thought about how we can care for our school and the world around us. This week, we began thinking about our very own Year 1 flower bed and how we can look after it throughout the year.

Week Beginning 21/09/2026

Year 1 are becoming more settled each day and are really starting to get into the rhythm of life in KS1. We have been so impressed with the children’s hard work, enthusiasm and growing confidence this week!

In History, we have been learning about Queen Victoria, looking at paintings and photographs to find out more about her and her life as a monarch. In RE, we have been thinking about how we can care for God’s creation, inspired by Laudato Si’ from Pope Francis. We created posters and postcards to share our messages about caring for our world. In English, we have planned our retell of Beegu and are ready to put our ideas into writing next week — our first piece of writing in Year 1! In Science we carried out our first investigation to learn how our eyes help us with our sense of sight.

Week Beginning 14/09/2026

Year 1 have been busy exploring their learning this week!

We have made a great start to our work as historians, using photographs to find out more about the life of Queen Elizabeth II. The children enjoyed looking closely at the photographs and sharing what they could notice and wonder about.

In RE, we visited our outdoor classroom as part of our Creation topic. We explored the different parts of creation we could spot around us and thought about the things that make us say “Wow!”

We have also been delving further into our class book Beegu, making predictions and doing more writing inspired by the story. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of number, including counting on and finding 1 more, and in Art we have been experimenting with drawing different types of lines to music.

Week Beginning 7/09/2026

What an exciting week we have had! We even had an alien invasion when a spaceship landed in our playground during our English lesson! This led us perfectly into our new class book, Beegu by Alexis Deacon, which the children are already enjoying.

Year 1 have really thrown themselves into their learning this week. We have started our new topics across the curriculum, including learning about Creation in RE, Monarchs in History, and exploring different types of lines using coloured pencils and oil pastels in Art. In Science, we have begun learning about the human body and started our enquiry question: “Do the oldest children have the longest feet?” We can't wait to find out!

The children have been absolutely brilliant and it has been wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity about all the new learning ahead. What a fantastic start to Year 1! We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Week Beginning 2/09/2026

What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 1!

The children have enjoyed sharing their summer projects with their classmates and have loved finding out more about each other. They have also impressed us with how enthusiastically they have jumped into their learning, thoroughly engaging with their phonics, writing and maths.

This week has also been about laying the foundations for a successful year in Year 1. We have been settling into our new routines, getting to know our classroom and building on the wonderful skills the children already have. It has been lovely to see them approach everything with such enthusiasm and confidence.

We are so proud of how well everyone has started their Year 1 journey and can’t wait for it to continue!
