Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Primary School & Nursery

Growing together in faith, hope and courage, we inspire each other, learning to continue Christ’s Mission.

English

At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School and Nursery, we believe that a quality English curriculum will develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion.

We view the starting point for English teaching as exposure to a wide range of quality texts which inspire children’s love of reading and learning. One of our priorities is helping children read and develop their all-important comprehension skills. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts.

We provide opportunities for Speaking and Listening in English as it is key to developing pupil’s language and communication skills and broadening their vocabulary, enabling them to become articulate speakers and writers. We believe that children should be able to read fluently in order to enjoy and be inspired by Literature and to develop an understanding of the world around them.  They should be given support and opportunity to develop communication skills which help them to lead a successful and rewarding life. These skills include the ability to write clearly and confidently and to convey meaning.

We believe that children need to develop a secure knowledge-base in English, which follows a clear pathway of progression as they advance through the primary curriculum. We recognise that a secure basis in literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.

Our School Librarians

Why We Became Librarians

We like helping others by:

  • choosing age appropriate books
  • reminding people to whisper
  • putting books back in the right place
  • providing pillows to people reading in the outdoor library
  • making sure the tables are tidy for people to read

We enjoy tidying up when the library is messy (which does not happen very often). We know everyone is having fun reading! Sometimes we even get stickers as a reward! If you need help, you can identify us by our pupil librarian lanyard. We love being librarians!

Amazing Our Lady of Lourdes Authors

We are inspired by pupils across the school daily. A perfect example of this is a budding author in the school who created their own book. They have inspired us to create a section in our library for Amazing Our Lady of Lourdes Authors. This is where any budding authors can share a book they have created with others. We look forward to seeing this shelf filled with the work of our authors across the school

Reading Cloud

"The more you that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places that you'll go" Dr. Seuss.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a well-stocked, inviting library where we can borrow books both fiction and non-fiction as well as poetry, graphic novels and many, many more.  It is a haven where you can engross yourself in a whole other world.

The Reading Cloud library system allows us to easily look for and reserve books and even recommends books for us to read. You can also leave book reviews sharing your opinions about what you have read. Please click on the link below to access Reading Cloud.
