St Bernadette
Hello everyone,
What a wonderful week we have had in Reception! We have been busy learning, exploring and discovering new things together as we continue to develop our skills and bring our exciting new topic, ‘Into the Woods’, to life.
Phonics: This week, we have been focusing on our Set 2 phonics sound ‘ay’. We have been practising recognising the sound, saying it clearly and spotting it in words. We have also been developing our early reading and writing skills by exploring words that contain ‘ay’ and using our phonics knowledge in our learning. It has been lovely to see the children growing in confidence as they practise their sounds!
Maths: We have been exploring shapes and numbers, looking closely at the different shapes we can find around us. We have been thinking about the characteristics of shapes, including their sides and corners, and discussing what makes each shape special. Through practical activities and hands-on exploration, we have been developing our mathematical vocabulary, noticing similarities and differences, and strengthening our understanding of number.
Reading and Exploring: This week, we have enjoyed a special visit to the library, where we explored a range of books and began thinking about the stories and topics we enjoy. We have been encouraged to follow our curiosity, share our interests and think about what makes us want to learn more. It has been wonderful to see the children discovering new books, sharing their ideas and developing their love of reading.
Into the Woods: We have been busy creating some exciting new classroom displays to help bring our new topic, ‘Into the Woods’, to life! We have been using our creativity and imagination to develop our learning environment, ready to inspire further exploration and discovery. We are looking forward to seeing where our curiosity takes us as we begin to investigate the wonders of woodland environments and the world around us.
We are so proud of the children's enthusiasm, creativity and growing confidence. It has been lovely to see them sharing their ideas, asking questions and learning together throughout the week. Well done, Reception!
Kind regards,
Reception Team
Hello everyone,
What a wonderful week we have had in Reception! We have been busy learning, exploring and discovering more about the world around us as we continue to enjoy our Autumn focus.
Phonics: We have been continuing to learn our sounds and develop our confidence in recognising and using them. We have also been building our understanding of sentence rules, learning how to put our ideas into sentences and beginning to understand the importance of things such as capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We are so proud of the progress the children are making as they develop their early reading and writing skills!
Maths: We have continued to explore number bonds, investigating the different ways numbers can be combined to make a whole. Through practical activities, games and discussions, we have been developing our understanding of how numbers fit together and strengthening our number knowledge.
Exploring Autumn: As part of our Autumn focus, we have been making some special autumn playdough, exploring and mixing colours inspired by those we might find in nature. This has encouraged us to look closely at the beautiful colours of the season and get creative with our learning. We have also been developing our understanding of the world around us through planting, nature walks and observing our ever-changing environment. These experiences encourage us to ask questions, share our discoveries and notice the wonderful changes that happen during Autumn.
We are so proud of the children's enthusiasm, curiosity and growing confidence in their learning. It has been lovely to see them exploring, discovering and learning together. Well done, Reception!

Hello everyone,
What a wonderful first week we have had in Reception! It has been such a pleasure welcoming all of the children into our classroom, and we have been so impressed with how positively they have settled into their new surroundings. It has been lovely to see the children beginning to build relationships with their teachers and new friends, and starting to feel happy, confident and comfortable in their new environment.
Throughout the week, we have been busy exploring the different areas of our classroom and getting to know all of the exciting resources and activities available to us. We have also enjoyed spending time in the garden, discovering our outdoor space and beginning to learn how we can use it safely and respectfully.
We have also had the opportunity to visit the library, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. We have started to explore the books available to us and talk about how we can look after and enjoy our school library.
A big part of our first week has been getting to know our daily routines. The children have been learning where to put their belongings, how to move around the classroom, when it is time to tidy up, and how we work and play together as a class.
