Our Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Intent

As a Catholic School the ethos and values of our Christian faith are at our core of everything we do.

Here at Our Lady of Lourdes we are proud to offer an ambitious, knowledge based curriculum which enables our pupils to become inquiring, enthusiastic, independent, successful and confident learners.

Our curriculum ensures that Religious Education contributes positively to the broad and balanced curriculum of a Catholic school through cooperation and dialogue with other subjects.

Our aim is to present pupils with an engaging comprehensive curriculum which is the basis of knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith thus enabling pupils to deepen their religious and theological understanding and be able to communicate this effectively.

Rooted in the curriculum are opportunities to promote spiritual learning, presenting an authentic vision of the Church’s moral and social teaching whilst raising pupils' awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them.

As leaders of the future,  pupils are supported in their preparation for life in modern Britain.  We are committed to the development of each individual to ensure they understand their role as Christians and upstanding citizens in today’s society by promoting the British Values of

  • Tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs
  • The Rule of Law
  • Democracy
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect

Our curriculum reflects the diverse environment of our school and allows every child to feel safe, supported and valued.  We aim to provide positive, memorable and enriching experiences which promote high quality learning and increase the cultural and social capital children require to succeed.

The Curriculum has been planned in collaboration with teachers across the school who have worked together to develop  21st Century skills-based opportunities which broadens knowledge and enriches learning.  Subjects are taught in sequence, which enables all students to develop a strong foundation of fundamental skills upon which they can build deeper knowledge and understanding.

Logically sequencing the curriculum enables learners to make progress and reach their full potential. Key concepts are revisited and schemas are linked and developed beyond the initial understanding to ensure commitment to long term memory. They acquire the basic knowledge needed to apply their learning to more complex tasks in order to achieve true mastery.  Teachers work with pupils to identify and bridge gaps in learning in order to allow pupils to achieve a greater depth of understanding.

By the time pupils reach the end of KS2 they will have mastered a range of skills that will support their future development.  They will leave us happy, confident and independent learners with the Gospel values, and our school values being at the heart of everything they do.
