St Mark - Year 4

Welcome to Year 4! We are so excited to begin this new school year with you!
This year will be filled with learning, growth, challenges and lots of fun. We will explore new ideas, build strong relationships and create lasting memories together. Our goal is to create a safe, supporting and engaging environment where every student feels valued and inspired to do their best.

Week Beginning 24th November 2025
In RE, we learnt when and why the Feast of Christ the King is celebrated and explored Jesus' ancestry that connects to God's covenant with Abraham. On Thursday, Year 4 led a Collective Worship in the chapel and Year 3 were invited to take part.
In English, we started writing log entries pretending to be Roz the robot. We learnt that the reports must contain factual information/data and we are avoiding any sort of emotions or feelings (Objective).
In Geography, we researched physical features of North America.
In Science, we constructed a variety of food chains, identifying producers, herbivores, predators and prey.
On Friday in Maths, we used Hit the Button to consolidate our times tables knowledge after having completed two different assessments.

Week Beginning 17th November 2025
In Maths, we have been working on the 7, 11 and 12 times tables and their division facts. On Monday, we went outside and had to draw a bar model of the multiplication they were given.
In Geography, we researched different types of climates of North America and write about location, temperature, landscape, life...
After a week of observation, we took out the eggs, which was not very pleasant, and recorded the changes we observed.
On Thursday, we learnt about the digestive system in humans. After that, we enjoyed our time reading in the Library.
On Friday, we went to the chapel for the "Forgiveness and Reconciliation" Liturgy.

Week Beginning 10th November 2025
On Monday and Tuesday, we completed Maths and English assessments.
For Remembrance Day, we created Research Maps with facts about the memorial day. It is a day to honour armed force members that died in the line of duty.
In Maths, we have been working on 3, 6 and 9 times tables and their division facts.
In Science, we understood that the eggshells are made of calcium carbonate, very similar to enamel. So we placed 4 eggs into 4 different transparent glasses containing water, apple juice, coca cola and vinegar. We will observe over time what happens to the eggshells and record the changes.
On Friday for Friendship Week, each child was given a secret mission to conduct throughout the day. It was secret, so they could not tell anyone. We also created comic strips and posters about Friendship and talked about the positives of being a good friend.

Week Beginning 3rd November 2025
On Monday in English, we began our new book The Wild Robot. Throughout the next 3 weeks we will be working towards creating a Survival Manual.
In Design and Technology, we explored the different climates of planet Earth and learnt where some of the products we consume come from.
In RE, we discovered the miracle of the flour and the oil in the story of Elijah and the widow. We then talked about Human Dignity and how every person is precious and loved by God. The children were allowed to create comic strips, diary entries or letters to retell the story.
In Continents Day, we created travel brochures, worked on different North American landmarks and also played Kahoot. The competition was real!

Week Beginning 13th October 2025
In Science, we researched bees and the vital role they play in our planet. Then we created posters about protecting bees.
Thanks to our research, in English we finished planning our non-chronological report about bees and we produced our final piece of writing.
In RE, we learnt the story of Joseph and his 11 brothers and retold the story in our books.
In History, we gave 5 different scenarios from Norman times and children worked and put together and act that they performed later on. Some of them were quite funny.

Week Beginning 6th October 2025
In English, we have been focusing on grammar this week for our non-chronological report. Apostrophes for possession and contraction, cohesive devices and pronouns.
In PE, the children raced against each other bouncing the plastic ball.
In Maths, we have been subtracting two 4 digit numbers, with one or more than one exchanges and then we have been doing the inverse to check if our answers were correct.
In History, we learnt about the Feudal System in Norman times and focused on the lives of nobles, peasants and the clergy. We compared their food, work, clothes and homes.
In RE, we explored how Martin Luther King Jr.'s faith inspired his work for equality and justice.
In Science, we researched important black scientists that changed the world and created posters.

Week Beginning 29th September 2025
Throughout the week in Maths, we have been working on additions that involved two 4 digit numbers, without exchange, with one exchange or multiple exchanges.
In Spanish, we are learning about fruit. We have been working on how to ask questions and answering them in Spanish. They find it quite tricky to remember that we need an upside down question mark/exclamation mark in the beginning, as well as at the end.
In RE, we have dedicated this week to Saint Therese of Lisieux. We researched her life and learnt her famous prayer. We highlighted her "Little Way", how small daily actions can have a huge impact on others.
In Science, we have been learning about the features of leaves and their function. We discussed the shapes and margins too. Then, went on a leaf hunt and discussed their features.

Week Beginning 22nd September 2025
This week in Maths, we have revised Roman Numerals and mastered rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In English, we have been using adverbials and expanded noun phrases for our setting and character descriptions.
In Art, we carried on with tints and shades and created a three dimensional effect when painting.
In Science, we learnt about vertebrates and invertebrates.
On Thursday, we went to the School Library and got a book to read in class.

Week Beginning 15th September 2025
In Maths, we have been working on the number line to 10000, comparing and ordering numbers. The children have been working really well.
In English, and after learning all the features of formal/informal letters, we produced a formal letter directed to me about an inspirational woman of your child's choice. They mentioned why they chose that figure, what they accomplished and what impacted them the most.
In History, we learnt about the challenges that King William had to face after becoming king of England and how he tried to solve them.
In Art, we carried on with tints and shades but this time we used Christmas decorations.
In Science, we learnt that all living things will have 7 characteristics: MRS GREN. We then created our own living thing and labelled distinctive characteristics of their creatures.

Week Beginning 8th September 2025
Throughout the whole week in Maths, we have been partitioning numbers to 1000, 10000 and 100000 in many different ways.
In English, we are reading a book called "Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World".
We have been looking at the formats of formal and informal letters and learning their features.
On Tuesday in Art, we learnt how to darken and lighten colour when mixing paint.
On Thursday in Science, we classified animals into different categories and learnt their features.
On Friday, we also had our comprehension lesson about Anansi and the Tiger.

Week Beginning 1st September 2025
We started the week off by revising the Year 3 Curriculum in Maths along with a lot of whiteboard show me activities. The children have also started to develop enthusiasm for reading a book.
