Physical Education

At Our Lady of Lourdes, our vision for Physical Education and Sport is that every child has access to a broad PE curriculum with opportunities for children to engage in regular physical activity and become competent and confident participants.

Our approach is to empower children to make links between exercise and its positive impact on physical and mental well-being. We do this by offering opportunities for children to increase their participation in sport through an extra-curricular club programme as well as inter/intra-school competitions in the hope that children develop a love and passion for sport and continue this into their later lives. Children explore and build on a variety of physical and interpersonal ‘Life Ladder’ skills such as teamwork and communications skills and learn to apply these skills in a variety of team and individual scenarios.  We also see swimming and water safety skills as an important life skills that allows children to be confident and competent swimmers by the time they leave Year 6.

PE lessons begin with a recapping of previous knowledge/skills to strengthen the learning and make links with upcoming lessons. This allows children to understand why they are studying a topic and how it links into PE and Sport. Children begin lessons with a warm up where they learn to develop their knowledge of how the body responds to exercise and the importance of a warm up. Our pathway for progressions allows children to begin with a simplified skill which then builds using a step-by-step progression where children to practise, improve and apply the new skill in a competitive environment with appropriate challenge. Our swimming provision follows the Swim England framework where children develop confidence in water and learn important aquatic and self-rescue skills, as well as learning to be competent in a range of strokes so that all children can swim 25 metres by the time they leave Year 6.
