St Teresa Year 5

Welcome to Year Five, St Teresa's class page.  My name is Mr Murphy and I'm enjoying teaching the class. I look forward to sharing lots of our learning with you throughout the term.

This term, 5T will be reading the book 'Wolf Brother' by Michelle Paver. Throughout our literacy lessons we will be learning how to create a discussion text, poems and our own narrative stories. We will also get many opportunities to take our learning outdoors, to encourage active learning and to support our different learning styles. Stay tuned for some pictures from our active learning lessons this week and throughout the term.

This week in Maths, we have been learning how to convert from ml to litres. We went outdoors and poured different amounts of water into measuring cylinders then converted them from ml to litres.

We have been celebrating geography week in school. Year 5 had the opportunity to learn new map skills through a workshop on Wednesday afternoon. The goal was to find small flags hidden within the playground using clues from a map of the school. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for the children.

To promote our understanding of other main religions, we have been learning about Buddhism this week throughout our Literacy lessons. Today we researched the lives of Buddhist monks and took some time out of our own busy schedule to do try some meditating!

This week in Literacy we have been focusing on The World's Climate. We have been learning about the dangers facing our planet from climate change. Getting outside to explore our local area, we were able to see lots of plastic pollution and littering close to our school. We hope to help in our local communities by telling others about how they can make a positive difference to our planet by not littering, reducing plastic and reusing items.

Last week, we were lucky to learn about circuits via an online workshop resourced by The National Grid. Children got the chance to explore how to power a home, a city and a country using different switches, LED's, paper clips and batteries.
