Hello and welcome back to a new school year in Our Lady of Lourdes. I am very excited to be teaching Year One this year and I have lots of exciting activities planned. Looking forward to getting to know you all over the coming weeks.
Year One Team
Miss McGrath and Ms. John
The children are getting very excited about the upcoming Christmas Nativity. There has been plenty of practice in preparation for it and they cannot wait to put on what will be a fantastic performance for friends and family.
This week we have been learning how to count one and two more or less than any number to twenty. Today we looked at odd and even numbers and the patterns when you count one more or less than an odd or even number and two more or less than an odd or even number.
Where the Wild Things Are
Today we had an exciting visitor come to the school to help us learn all about our new book 'Where the Wild Things Are.' We played games, did drama and took part in the story by creating soundscapes to add to the atmosphere of a story. We all had a really fun morning learning.
We made poppies in class to celebrate Remembrance Day. We used crepe paper and paint to create different types of poppies. We also discussed the importance of Remembrance Day, why we wear poppies and why we mark the occasion every year with a two minute silence.
This week we brought in our favourite toys to show and share with our classmates. This was a fun way to introduce our new IPC topic 'The Magic Toymaker'.
Year 1 and 2 Trip to the Synagogue
Yesterday, Year 1 and 2 went on a trip to Wembley United Synagogue. They were greeted by the Rabbi and he showed them all the signs and symbols associated with Judaism. The children were allowed to see the Torah (the Jewish holy book) and the ark (where the Torah scrolls are kept) Everyone was very impressed at how respectful all children were and how well - mannered and well - behaved Our Lady of Lourdes children are. Everyone had a lovely afternoon.
Every two weeks we are visited by Brother David who teaches us lots of things about the Catholic religion. This week he showed us rosary beads and explained why people pray the rosary. We also began to learn a new hymn called 'Immaculate Mary'.
Cultural Assembly Artwork
Today we were creating African prints and patterns in preparation for our cultural assembly next week.
This week we were learning to count in 10s. We counted in 10s from 0 - 100. After that, we began to count on 10 from any number between 1-100.
What an exciting start to our IPC topic. Here are a selection of some of the exciting professions Year 1 chose to come to school as last Friday.
Here we are acting out the story of Handa's Surprise. We love retelling our stories through drama.
