Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to the Summer term Year 2!


We are delighted to welcome back Year 2 to the Summer term. Ms. Duncan and I are both really looking forward to continue having fun learning and are in the process of planning lots of exciting educational lessons and activities.

Year 2 have been looking at the characteristics of Jesus. Each group acted out a specific characteristic in an everyday scenario. The other groups then guessed the characteristic. As you can see, lots of fun was had!

In pairs, Year 2 took part in a treasure hunt to find different synonyms linking to climate change in the playground! They had lots of fun as I am sure you can see.

Year 2 were excited to visit the new outdoor classroom today for some Maths revision! We cannot wait to use this fantastic new resources for the rest of the term.

During other faith week, we have been learning about Buddhism. Today we learned about the importance of meditation. We learned how to prepare for meditation and the techniques used. We listened to music from the singing bowl and had an enlightening experience.

Our topic in Science this term is Changing Shape. We were investigating what different skills were needed to change the shape of Playdough.

We were examining the work of the famous British contemporary artist Julian Opie. We then created portraits in a similar style to that of Opie.

In Literacy, we were acting out different scenes from 'The Hodeheg'. We had loads of fun watching how each group interpreted the different scenes.

In Literacy we used mime to act out several different emotions. We also used hot seating to discover more about the character Max from our class novel 'The Hodgeheg'.

In Art, we have been studying human form. We created a collage using a variety of different facial features.

In RE, we have been learning about the story of Pentecost. The class acted the story out in groups. One group were the Disciples, one group were the wind and the last group were the flames.

In Music, we have been creating a musical journey to Treasure Island.  We decided to travel by boat and went outside to create a musical ship yard!

In Art, we are learning about human form. Everyone began by tracing a skull before drawing their own and adding colour.

Our topic for IPC this term is Treasure Island. We began the topic by taking part in lots of different pirate activities! Some of these included creating our own pirate names and learning pirate commands! We had lots of fun learning as you can see.

Year 2 were creating their own Robobugs! These had many different features such as camouflage and armour. They then made their creations out of playdough before sharing their amazing creations with the class.

Year 2 recently went on a scavenger hunt to find words that rhyme with seed. They then learned about what is needed to grow plants. Everyone then got an opportunity to help to plants some cress seeds sunflower seeds and carrott seeds.

For Science week, Year 2 were learning about growing plants. They learned about how seeds are dispersed and even made their own helicopter seeds!

Spring Term 2021

Welcome to the Spring term Year 2!


Both Ms. Duncan and I are delighted to welcome all of Year 2 to the new Spring term. To begin with, we will be learning using Microsoft teams which will be a new fun and educational experience for us all. We look forward to welcoming you all back into class soon.

Year 2 were really excited to make their Easter Bonnets today! They cannot wait for the parade tomorrow.

In Maths, we have been learning about Carroll diagrams. The class arranged themselves into a Carroll diagram according to their gender and age. This practical activity really helped them to understand the concept.

Year 2 have really enjoyed working together in their Drama lessons and having fun learning about new dramatic techniques.

Mrs. Kent had a wonderful Music lesson with Year 2 recently relating to the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Today Year 2 were asked to imagine what they thought could be around the bear in a scene from 'The Bear and the Piano'. It was a joy to see all their creative ideas and hear their thought process.

In Maths, Year 2 recently created pictographs to represent how many boys and girls were in the class. They each chose their own colourful design.


Here is a list of the words you should know by the end of Year Two.  You may want to start learning some of them while you are at home, but don't worry if you don't know them all.  We will spend plenty of time working on them when we are back.

My name is Mr. McCarthy and I will be the class teacher of Year 2 this year alongside Ms. Duncan. We are delighted to welcome back all the children to school to continue making learning a fun and enjoyable experience that can be used both inside and outside of the classroom. We look forward to a productive and rewarding school term.


In IPC, our topic is 'Who Am I?'. The class read the book 'Mixed' about the importance of appreciating that everyone is different. Everyone took a selfie and then drew a self portrait.

In Art, we were learning how to create 3D drawings. It was their first time attempting 3D drawings and they did very well creating their planets.

In Science, we created bird feeders to investigate which type of food was the most popular. Year 2 used bread, fruit, raisins, bird seed and mealworms! Stay tuned for the results of our investigation.

Before Christmas, the whole school will be watching the pantomime Sleeping Beauty. Year 2 were creating a map that could be used during the pantomime and cannot wait to see if there map will be used in it!

Using their prior learning, Year 2 are now adding and subtracting 20. They are beginning to identify the pattern used and are having fun learning.

Well done to our latest Dojo champions for working so hard this week. Keep it up!

In Science this week, Year 2 were identifying carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. They also learned about food chains and even created their own in groups!

In RE this week, Year 2 have been learning about the importance of prayer. They spoke about why we pray and modelled how they should pray.

Our first Golden Chair of the year! You have worked incredibly hard and are becoming more confident in your learning. Well done and keep it up!

In Maths this week, Year 2 have been learning how to add and subtract 10. At the beginning of the week they found it tricky but by the end of the week they were able to use inverse. This is when you change an addition problem into a subtraction problem or a subtraction problem into an addition problem. Well done Year 2!

Well done to our latest Dojo champions! Your hard work has paid off, well done!

During Black History Month, Year 2 are learning about the life of Rosa Parks. The children worked in groups to act out moments from her life. They were incredibly interested in and respectful of her story throughout.

In our Art lesson, Year 2 were learning about Frottage. They were using leaf rubbings to create their own piece of art work.

In Science, Year 2 have been learning about micro habitats. They identified micro habitats around the school as well as the creatures that live in them!

In Science, Year 2 were researching about different habitats! They worked in pairs and discovered lots of different facts about different habitats..

In our Geography lesson, Year 2 were looking at maps of the locality. They identified where various amenities were on the map including our school! They then created a route from our school to locations such as The Five Precious Wounds Church and Stonebridge Station.

This week in Art, Year 2 were learning how to create rubbings using crayons and a variety of materials including lego blocks, leaves and fossils!

During our Art lesson, Year 2 were exploring how to make different patterns by using different materials. They were very proud of their work!

During our Literacy lesson, Year 2 completed a wordsearch including high frequency words. They were incredibly focused throughout and enjoyed the challenge.

In Maths, we have had fun revising how to solve addition problems. The children solved addition problems to complete a colour by numbers activity. As you can see, they certainly had fun learning!
